Contrary to popular opinion neutrals aren’t necessarily boring. Vibrant colors have their place but sometimes the peaceful calmness of a neutrally decorated home is the ideal environment for renewing one’s spirit and offers a needed contrast to all the external noise in one’s life. The home featured in this post is the New York apartment of San Francisco-based designer Douglas Durkin. His use of texture and various finishes adds interest to his Manhattan pied-a-terre.
The kitchen cabinets are painted in a custom color and are lacquered to create a reflective finish which allows light to bounce from surface to surface.
The silver travertine used in this bath adds rhythm to an otherwise neutral color scheme.
This apartment is just a small sampling of how texture and a mix of finishes can add spark to a neutral design scheme. To see other spaces check out my Pinterest page for additional sources of inspiration.
