One of the most interesting final exams that I’ve ever taken was in a historical interiors class which involved watching films and identifying various architectural and interior design motifs and details. Once you’ve been trained to watch a film or any television show in that manner watching TV is never the same. When it comes to my TV viewing habits there are relatively few programs that I make the effort to watch on a regular basis with the exception of my Thursday night standing appointment viewing Scandal. As a Washingtonian it’s hard to believe that watching a program about Washington political scandals could still be new or interesting. But getting back to design it struck me that for some, the homes of the leading characters are a source of inspiration. Although there is a lot of buzz about Olivia Pope’s fashion sense when it comes to her home design sense not so much. Could it be that in the mist of so many scandals it’s hard to get excited about a traditional home décor scheme?
Washington has a reputation of being conservative but that doesn’t mean that if you told someone that Thomas Jefferson slept in your home people would be inclined to believe you. Without question Olivia Pope’s apartment is very classic and refined and when it comes to purchasing the foundational investment pieces that were mentioned in previous blog posts her apartment offers many smart choices to consider. You can’t go wrong with the sofa, occasional chairs, flooring, and window treatments as shown in the photo above and the neutral color scheme provides an opportunity to layer the look with accessories, artwork, and accent pieces that could transform the room to one more reflective and customized to individual preferences that makes the look ones own. Different choices in tables, lamps, and wall sconces could easily take Olivia’s apartment from traditional to transitional. Some clues to better define your own personal style can often be found in your wardrobe choices. Based on Olivia’s fashion choices I’m not so sure I would expect her to live in an uber conservative traditional home. So let’s take a look at some sources of similar investment pieces as found in Olivia Pope’s apartment and look at some options to accessorize the look in a way that’s more reflective of her fashion choices.

Olivia Pope’s choice of this Michael Kors sheath embellished with black lace is classic but not boring.
Olivia’s Armani peplum style coat is a fresh deviation and twist from a more traditional pea coat.
Olivia Pope also has a glamorous side as shown dressed in this elegant and vintage couture evening gown.
In the three fashion choices shown above Olivia often departs from solidly traditional styles with just enough flare to convey a fresh modern look without being overly trendy. Her style is a balance between classic elegance and glamour. Her look is far from one dimensional so it probably wouldn’t be a huge leap for her to dip her baby toe into transitioning her home décor from a traditional to a transitional look. Below are some choices that can be mixed and matched to achieve a more balanced representation of her inclination for a modern twist when it comes to her fashion sense. By incorporating warm metals to an otherwise traditional décor it’s possible to up the glamour factor.

This exercise is an example of how you can be inspired by a room whether it is in a magazine or on the set of your favorite TV show and tweak the look based on clues from your own fashion style to create a design that better represents your personal design aesthetic. The idea is to creatively customize the inspiration rather than clone it. Until next time.
